Gemma Ward har haft ett officiellt sabbatsår från modellandet. Agenturen hävdar å det bestämdaste att hon inte gått i modellpension utan att det bara handlar om ett kortare jobbavbrott. Rykten som gör gällande att anledningen till att Gemma tagit en time out är att hon fått problem med viktöktning har cirkulerat länge i modevärlden. Redan inför S/S 07 sägs det att hon var svårbokad på grund av hennes vikt och många elaka tungor viskade om en markant förändring i kroppsvolym när hon dök upp i en denimbikini på Chanels visning S/S 07 (själv tycker jag nog att hon ser precis lika modellsmal ut som vanligt). Karl Lagerfeld kommentar på ryktena kring Gemmas vikt (och anledningen till varför Karl valt att boka henne) förvånade många (han har tidigare uppmuntrat ett väldigt smalt ideal bland modelltjejer):
“It is the first time I have ever done something like this. I have nothing against skinny girls. But these were terrible. They looked as if they had grown up in a Third World country with no food to eat. I sent them back to the agency. I did not think they should be modeling”.

Detta är ju löjligt. I huvud taget modebranchens fixering vid smala kvinnokroppar. Tankarna går till Anja Rubik som efter några säsonger med något färre bokningar gick ned rejält, och sedan var hon med i matchen igen. Det blir lite som branchen i ett nötskal som faktiskt blir rätt töntigt. Jag älskar mode, men faktiskt är det kläderna, skorna och väskorna jag vill åt, inte modellerna, så på ett sätt så bryr jag mig inte om det, men å andra sidan är dom faktiskt en av dagens förebilder för många.
Om det där klassas som fet så vill jag inte höra vad dom skulle säga om mig. Skrämmande!

Gemma Ward är en av världens vackraste kvinnor tycker jag! Hoppas hon tar upp sin modell karriär igen vare sig den "nya" kroppen eller inte.
