15 Juli 1997 chockades modevärlden av en fruktansvärd nyhet, Gianni (Giovanni) Versace, modelegend och hyllad designer hade blivit brutalt mördad utanför sitt hus vid Miami Beach, Florida. Gianni vars begåvning var hyllad av branschen så väl som celebriteter och kunder skapade under sin livsstil en sexig, vågad och nytänkande estetik som gjorde modehuset Versace till en av de mest framgångsrika modehusen under 80- och 90-talet. Giannis mördare, Andrew Cunanan, återfanns 8 dagar efter mordet död i ett båthus, enligt polisen ska han ha begått självmord. Gianni Versace var Andrews sista offer i en rad mord som han utfört under en period på 3 månader. Fortfarande återstår många frågetecken kring Giannis död och spekulationer kring maffiakopplingar och andra konspirationsterorier florerade friskt kort efter mordet. I september 1997 tog Giannis bror Santo Versace över rollen som VD för Versace och hans syster Donatella blev modehusets nya chefsdesigner.
